When I was about 11 years old I was going back for an evening to my friends James house. I remember that school had been a pretty average day however James was excited because his dad was coming to pick us up in his new car.  

When his father turned the corner in his flashy new Mercedes I think we both lit up in excitement. I forget which model it was now, I recall it being an E-Class, but regardless of what type, the 3 pointed star and exceptional shape of the Mercedes, along with its crisp silver colour were all staggering. Inside was no different. James smiled to me in the back seat and said, “One day, I’m going to have one of these.”

Fast forward more years than I care to mention.

James and I are still in touch and close friends. He went off to university to study Law and now works in the legal world in London. This memory of mine makes me smile because when I last ventured into London to see him, sure enough he rolled up to pick me up in a Mercedes. We laughed about the story, but I think there is a lot that can be said about those memories that we build up as children.

In 1969 ‘The Italian Job’ made an Icon of a top British Actor in the form of Michael Caine. His character Charlie Croker heading up a team of crooks to carry out a huge Gold heist in Italy arguably has some of the most memorable lines in film history, including the legendary line…

However… whilst the movie made an icon out of Caine… it also created an icon out of the Mini.

In 2000, BMW, having bought the rights to the MINI, began designing the new MINI. Stephenson, the designer of the new MINI was quoted as saying,

‘ We wanted the first impression when you walk up to the car to be it could only be a mini ‘

The new mini does everything the old one did. Compact, smart, iconic and above all, it draws the eye.
